eduroam UK Monitoring Probes

One of the challenges facing eduroam is the large numbers of Service Providers (SP) and the varying quality of the service they offer. If users experience problems while roaming and subsequently contact their home site, the Identity Provider (IdP) often is limited in the support they can provide. In the UK we have been working on some simple probes which can be deployed at Service Provider locations to report on the quality of the service offered in that location. The probes not only perform authentication checks but also test for compliance with the UK technical specification (e.g. open ports and protocols). The probes then report centrally and the information is available to site administrators. This allows the administrator to quickly determine if there are any problems with an SPs deployment when a user reports a problem.
