Data Analytics & Big Data in Education

Harnessing the potential of data analytics and big data has enabled organisations across a whole range of sectors to implement systems that allow them to make better, data-driven decisions. The education sector is no different. This talk will discuss the different ways that data analytics and big data have been used in education to enable data-driven decision making by students, teachers and administrators. The examples discussed will include early identification of retention problems, personalising learning content for students, designing effective dashboards for teachers and forecasting demand for courses and resources. The talk will also discuss the challenges faced by those tasked with implementing systems of this kind including the relative data sparsity we face surprisingly often, the associated data protection issues and the difficulties in designing solutions for such diverse audiences.
