geant RINA: AN OPPORTUNITY FOR NRENs TO LEAD INTERNET RESEARCH

National Research and Education Networks (NRENs) have historically been in to the front seat of applied research along with members of their own constituency in a way that commercial concerns would find difficult. NRENs were leading the way by trialling, piloting and deploying a revolutionary technology that the commercial sector couldn’t afford to invest in. Currently, NRENs are facing increasing competition large players in the private market, mainly because all networks use the TCP/IP internet architecture. TCP/IP has been around for 40 year, the Recursive InterNetwork Architecture (RINA) is a back-to-basics approach where NRENs could lead a new disruption in networking.
