Mark Johnston

Mark Johnston is the Assistant Director of ICT at the University of Southampton. Mark has spent several chapters at Southampton, from his Undergraduate degree and early career through to now being part of the directorate with a specific remit for specialist research support and technology strategy. There are over 250 FTE’s in our team that are responsible for all service provision to a user community of ~25,000 students and ~6,000 staff.

Mark’s recent achievements have been the migration of all services to a new purpose-built off-site data centre and the delivery of all ICT to the University’s first off-shore campus (University of Southampton Malaysia Campus, or USMC). Subsequent to USMC, other ventures are surfacing and Mark has taken accountability for delivering our services to the key strategic global initiatives. In the last few months, that has involved a number of engagements in China and Singapore.

Outside the Higher Education sector, Mark’s commercial career began in the global ICT outsourcing market when he became responsible for the technical delivery in UK and Ireland for a well-known global manufacturing and research organisation. Mark also went to the opposite end of the employment spectrum (before the bubble burst) on a start-up software company that was pioneering in the global SAAS space some 15 years ago.
